digits today. 60s at the coast, keeping it pleasant with the 35 to 38-degree temperature spread and then we will look for a little further cooling into the week ahead. i'll explain later. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. victims of friday's movie theater massacre will be remembered tonight at a number memorial in aurora, colorado. right now it stands at 12 killed, 58 injured. the suspect, james holmes, is being held in solitary confinement in a local jail. he is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow. police say he planned the attack for months. they now safely got in his apartment. we have a reporter in aurora

bringing us their story. >> the community of aurora is banding together. this message ever messages of hope, love and sorrow is the latest show of hope for the 12 people who died and those injured in the movie theater shooting as suspected shooter james holmes sits in jail. some of the people who lived throughout horror returned to the scene. >> i haven't been able to sleep. all of it has been going through my head. >> lisa tells me she was fortunate enough to get out of the theater not long after the theater began. >> he had a mask on and a bulletproof vest and a gun belt on him and one on his waste and took the one in his hand and started going off. >> her step dad used to live in cupertino so she had family in the area. they know century 16 is where she usually goes for big movie premieres. >> everybody was call off the

hook because they know we live in the area. >> she came back for her car but didn't want to be there. two others did not return to the theater. >> it was just total chaos. it was total panic and total a chaos and it's kind of a blush. >> they live in san roof but moved there to see their mom. they convinced her to let them go to the midnight theater. >> you were worried about them driving to the theater but it never occurred to worry about something like this. >> they were one theater over. >> he had a hole in his forearm and blood was coming out of it. they rushed out of the theater to get help for their friend, who they say is in good spirits today. >> they all say it's still very surreal but the girls and their mom, they seem to be doing well. the girls were chatty and friendly and giggling together and they say it's not going to let them stop them from living

their lives abc7 news. >> and abc7 news will continue to bring putts live reports this evening and tweet updates using hashtag theatershooting. police say they should be investigating the suspect's apartment by tomorrow. yesterday the apartment was cleared of explosives which helped preserve clues that could lead to a motive in this massacre. a bomb squad blew up an explosion he have device so other crews could get inside. chemicals were gathered up and driven to a remote location. police officials say the apartment was wired to kill whoever came through the door. it was going to be a police officer, okay? so make no mistake about it what was going on there. you can think we are angry, we sure as ellis are angry. >> police say holmes could months to plan the rampage. all twelve victims have now been identified. the young is a six-year-old

veronica mozer. her mom is in critical condition. a boy, johnathan blnk was also killed and an air force sergeant. rebeck was way a mom with two kids. gordon began and alexander also died. the other victims are jessica ghawi, john larimer, matt mcquinn and alex sullivan. many of the victims died heroes. david wright has their stories. >> there was a real life villain inside that theater but real life heros, too. people saved their girlfriend's lives by sacrificing their own. john laramiemer leaped over his seat to shield his girlfriend and then his buddies dragged his body out of the theater, not willing to leave a man behind. alex jumped in front of his girlfriend, taking a bullet that would have his her.

and target employee matt mcquinn saved his girlfriend and coworker samantha the same way. she was injured, shot in the leg, but her family said mcquinn's quick actions save her life. the coroner broke the news to the families. many had been frantic all day with missing loved ones. >> find my son. i don't know where he is, okay? somebody find him and call us. tell him to call us. >> his son never called. it was his birthday. instead of celebrating, his father learned he's dead. >> in hospital rooms across the denver area, survivors are struggling to make sense of all of this. this 14-year-old now has a bullet hole in his back. >> is that bullet still inside you. >> it's still inside but they said they aren't taking it out because it's in a safe place and won't do me any harm. it's shocking to see how fast you could die, how fragile life

is. >> how do you think this is going to change your life? >> it's going to make me more careful in what i do. i'll try to think twice before i do something. and how movie premieres, there's a lot of people, maybe i'll wait for a dvd. >> david wright reporting. the tragedy in colorado has bay area movie theaters stepping up security. the guardian angels are patrolling a san francisco complex where a batman movie is playing and in san jose a theater was quickly evacuated this weekend when an alarm sounded. we have the details. >> this is cell phone video of the amc theater in san jose moments after an order to evacuate was heard. all 15 theaters were emptied out after an alarm started blaring at the east ridge theater. it was an alarm from a

malfunctioning water main but they thought it was another attack. >> i thought it was a repeat of what happened. >> the complex was closed for half-hour. security has been ramped up in many theaters showing the batman film. officers will stop by the complex when not answering calls. at san francisco, the guardian angels have taken up patrols around the theater. he said sometimes just their presence is a deterrent. >> we are keeping an eye on people that they look suspicious. our job is to make sure that we can deter anything that might happen. >> if anything, the presence of either police or the guardian angels is a grim reminder of how a night out can turn into a nightmare. she came bay with a three-month-old child to check on future batman showings. she won't come anytime soon. >> because of what happened, i'll scared. >> she she'd up with her nieces and nephews. the youngest one says nothing

>> developing news out of penn state this morning where the president of the university of university says he has ordered the removal of the statue of hall of fame coach joe paterno. we have a live look at the work

that is being done right now. there's a blue tarp that covers that statue. it has been a target for paterno's critics after former fbi director louie free found paterno and three top administrators at penn state covered up for former assistant coach jair sandusky who awaits sentencing for child molestation. that statue is fenced off. you can't see much because it is covered by the blue tarp. the university president rodger erickson said in a statement he realizes his decision to remove his statue will not be popular with some people on campus but he's certain it is the right thing to do. a sight few the thought would ever happen, gay and lesbian members of the military marching in uniform. thousands of the supporters in the crowd showed gratitude to the gay service members, some even saluting them. support also came from straight

members of the military. just last week the department of the defense gave active duty military members the go ahead to wear their uniforms at this parade. >> it's a great day knowing that a couple years ago we could have been discharged for the simple fact of being gay and now to the fact we can be proud of who we are and not hide who we are. it's a fantastic day. fantastic day. >> last year the military dropped it's don't ask-don't tell policy that cost many their military careers. a bay area assemblywoman convicted of shoplifting last year plans to run for office in alameda county. today "the chronicle" reports east bay assemblywoman has filed papers declaring her intent to run for the supervisor seat left vacant. she resigned the post recently to deal with personal matters. former union city councilman richard available currently serves in her seat.

not quite as hot. the live doppler hd, all is clear, not expecting rain but the low clouds will be hugging the shoreline and a few them will push across the bay into oakland. we have some up the coast and then a southerly win is going to add to that cooling for tomorrow, the beginning of the work week. 55 in oakland. good morning, san carlos. 59. notice the 60s out into the east bay. last night 11:00 it was 82 in antioch. so really temperatures really had a long way to go to reach these readings. still quite mild. 54 in the city. 56 in san rafael. so we are cooler than we were 24 hours ago in most spots. so the areas of fog from the peninsula, the north bay, a little into the east bay and, of course, the city. that will bring temperatures down around 5 degrees today. with each and every day we will look for a little more cooling. it will be gradual and temperatures finally coming back down to where they should be for this time of year. there's the fog and by about 11:00 we are mostly sunny and the fog wants to hang out along

the peninsula, daly city, pacifica, half moon bay but it too shall clear and we will look for a sunny afternoon, although it will be cooler. so the reason why a little twist in the atmosphere, an upper level low there and as it pushes to the north and east of us, it is bringing about a is it 11200-foot marine layer and that's allowing for the temperatures to come back. some of that marine air trickling into the delta. even into the east bay where you had 100s, a few degrees cooler and more of an on shore push through tuesday and wednesday brings temperatures back into the 80s. so we will be looking at a nice range today from low 60s half moon bay. notice the fog is pulling back with 68 in the city. free concert at dolores park as well as lake merit they have a concert going on. 78 there. and swimming on alcatraz today. a good day for that but it will start off foggy. 93 concord, 83 in fremont and, of course, we have the a's in town, they have been in town,

hopefully the sweep of the yankees today. 90 there. and if you are headed into oakland it should be a beautiful afternoon. not as warm as yesterday but starting out in the 70s at 1:00 and by about 4:00 upper 70s. so today about 3 to 5 degrees of cooling. tomorrow another three or four degrees of cooling. no more 90s. we are into the 80s and temperatures coming down to below normal. no big dramatic ten to fifteen drop of degrees in temperatures. sorry, your warm nights are over. >> okay. >> turn on the heat. >> thanks, lisa. let's check out sports. in good an hour tiger woods tees off trailing adam scott by five strokes in the final round of the british open championship. last night the a's remained one of the hottest teams in baseball in the month of july with another win over the visiting yankees. collin resch has the highlights in this morning's sports. good morning. how about this?

accept nothing less. >> the victims of friday's movie theater massacre will be remembered tonight at a public memorial in aurora, colorado. suspect james holmes is due to make his first court appearance tomorrow. a federal investigator tells the associated press the semiautomatic weapon, the assault rifle that he used in that shooting, jammed during the attack which forced the shooter to switch to another gun with less firepower. police say he took months to plan the rampage that killed twelve people and injured dozens more. abc's rebecca stevens is? aurora to bring us more on the investigation. president obama heads to colorado today to console a community grieving and trying to understand one of the worse mass shootings in the nation's history. >> whoever thought that it would

immediately affect my family when i see other shootings and events and i think, oh, my gosh, i can imagine what those families are going through. now i can imagine. >> the suspect, james holmes, was set on a path of destruction, not only killing and injuring dozen in a colorado movie theater, but in his apartment was a minefield of explosive bob traps, designed to quill anyone that entered. saturday was spent detonating the traps. >> make no mistake this apartment was designed, based on everything i have seen, to kill whoever entered it. >> as authorities searched holmes' apartment for evidence, we are learning more about the suspect. so far just a few photos of james holmes have emerged. here he is smiling in his high school yearbook. and as a neuroscience ph.d. student at the university of colorado. holmes was one of the half-dozen ph.d. students with federal grants for the national

institutes of health, studying neuroscience. and those who know holmes call him quiet and an introvert. >> a nice kid, grew up in a nice neighborhood, and i don't know what happened >> he was the kind of person that if you teed him, he would just sort of sit there and smile and really not do anything about it. >> according to reports, holmes is in a county jail, apparently locked up for his own protection. he is due in court on monday. >> late saturday there were false reports of a second suspect, but police interviewed a person of interest and dismissed him. reporting in aurora, colorado, rebecca stevens, abc7 news. the colorado shootings have turned the spotlight on gun control. the shooter, james holmes, appeared to have obtained his arsenal legally. tom lost his son daniel in the killings at columbine high school. he said not enough has been done to toughen gun laws since that massacre that left 13 people dead.

of the colorado theater massacre throughout the weekend. you can also get the latest anytime on abc7news.com and on twitter and on our facebook page, facebook.com/abc7news. back here in the bay area this morning a five-year-old girl is in critical condition at oakland children's hospital. she was the victim of a drive-by shooting yesterday afternoon. it happened at the corner of bancroft and 50th avenue in oakland. abc7 news reporter sergio quinn continuena explains how she was shot right in front of at fire station. >> rhonda said she was walking with her daughter and her friend's little girl in front of fire station 18. her daughter was playing with the station's doorbell when the gunman started shooting. >> that's all we heard was pow, pow, and she started walking slow and looked back and gush out with blood. >> the firefighters heard the

gunshots and quickly went outside to see what was happening. >> we grabbed them and open the doors and brought her in. innocent bystander shooting. >> firefighters quickly worked on the five-year-old girl, stabilized her and rushed her here to children's hospital where her mother tells me she remains in the intensive care unit >> the the bullet went inside hr net and in the back of her bone. it's lodged inside the is skin and the bone. they are trying to see does the bullet need to be removed or should they leave the bullet there. >> police don't have much information to work with about the shooter and the suspect car. it's described only as a late model lexus with no hub caps. davis is angry. she wants anyone who saw what happened to call the police. >> somebody seen that car but if you are a for real person, you know who you are. you know what you did. step up to the plate. turn yourself in.

>> in oakland, abc7 news. this morning the highway patrol and oakland police are piecing together the chain of events last night that led to windows of a chp cruiser being shot out. the officer was not injured. it began as a traffic stop of a white van because one of the occupants wasn't wearing a seatbelt but two people jumped out of that van and tried to get away by wading through a canal. a black accura drove up on the scene near 880 and 66th avenue. the car rammed cruiser and fired shots into the car. the car had been reported stolen earlier. so far no arrests, no reports at least of anyone being arrested. the investigation continues. this morning postal inspectors and the fbi are investigating a rash of letters containing a suspicious white powder being sent to bay area police departments. oakland, union city, berkeley,

hayward, san leandro and now san francisco have had similar letters delivered in the past two days. yesterday an envelope arrived at san francisco's northern station on fillmore street around 11:00 a.m. even though four of the other five envelopes contained flour, their response was immediate. >> we don't want to get into a sense of complacency that we write the incident off before we investigate it. so if we get a report, especially a high profile group like the police or politicians or whatever, we are going to respond appropriately. >> well, the substance sent there also turn out to be flour. >> coming up next, the world's largest a.i.d.s. conference begins today with a cure in sight. why scientists believe they now have the tools to wipe out the disease. and here's a live look from our sutro cam. a drop in temperatures coming over the next few days. lisa argen, our meteorologist,

lisa argen will be along with your accuweather forecast in just a few. the world's largest a.i.d.s. conference opens today in washington, d.c., and it marks a turning point in the 30 year battle against the pandemic. researchers will be announcing that an end to a.i.d.s. is finally a realistic goal. abc7 news reporter mark matthews has the story. >> the head of the division told reporters this is a remarkable time. >> because for the first time we are going to be talking about the beginning of the end of the a.i.d.s. epidemic. >> the director of the exhibition points to a series of breakthroughs, studies that prove that a combination of antiviral drugs could reduce transmission of a.i.d.s. by 96%. that male circumcision reduces the risk by half and in 2007 timothy brown underwent a bone transplant and became the first person ever to become cured of

there's a poetry to it. horse with human moves. >> when you look at it, it's very moving, very touching, because it's real. it's not tricks. it's people working and sharing a huge stage with the horses. >> after cofounding cirque du soleil, he works with cavalia. it's played 2,000 performances around the world. this is the first time in san jose. >> the theme is the encounter between human and horse. there is a bonding between the two. >> we do training which is different than -- you know, you don't need to hit the horse to make him do what you want. you just need to take time. >> of course, the story here is the wonderful interaction between human and horse. and the dazzling theatrical special effects. but part of the story also extends outside the white big top to this field and others like it. it's home to the bureauing owl.

cooling. and then cooling with each and every day this week, bringing us with temperatures slightly below average by the end of the work week. so we will get it going today with the low clouds and fog. in fact, we've got cloudy skies in hayward and fremont, napa, san francisco and oakland. so by 11:00, though, it is sunny out there. we will see the fog continue to pull back. but the sea breeze up to 20 miles an hour keeping it kind of cool today around daly city. but the city, well, you are going to cool off around six to eight degrees. here's why. there is a little system right over the bay area and with that, that is enhancing the low clouds, the fog, and the flow of marine air even into the delta. just a trickle into the delta so that will allow for the temperatures to come down into the 90s. so by the middle of the week with more of this marine air and a stronger onshore push, we will say good-bye to those 90s after monday. so today and tomorrow the warmer days of the work week.

highs today ranging from the low to mid-80s. even a few upper 80s. the higher elevations, the hills there, 88 saratoga and 38 santa clara. on the peninsula a mix of 70s and 80s. 55 in the sunset district. waking up to the low clouds. then sunny. 87 in petaluma and 85 in san rafael. near east way, upper 70s in oakland today. that's a few degrees cooler. 83 in fremont and out over the else you will notice we are in the mid-90s. instead of hot we will call it warm to hot with 94 in pleasanton. lots of fog here this morning. but by about 11, 12, we begin to see more sun. 91 morgan hills. by the middle of the week it becomes a little more dramatic, the cooling trend. getting cool for july but it's up and it's down. >> but that's below normal, as

you said. >> yes. >> thank you, lisa. well, while many school kids are spending their summer hanging out, a group of 12 and 13 year olds from san jose is learning what it takes to create computers. it's all part of the silicon valley education foundation summer program to boost math skills. ears abc7 news education reporter leeann melendez. >> math power is a summer program designed for sixth and seventh graders in the county who need to sharpen their math skills. today they are learning how math works in a real world. they start by picking a design n this case a pencil case made of aluminum and a binder case made of plastic. the silicon valley education foundation sponsors the four week program. >> today we are at an location where there are innovators using math to develop their products and sharing how the math is so relevant in all the development. >> the company hosting and teaching them is white leaf.

a small santa clara company that manufactures computers. the 20-something-year-old founders are best friends who grew up in san jose. they learn about design by using math. >> you have to know your exact measurements of the circle per se just to get one thing correctly. >> you have to take measurements with the ruler and sometimes you have to convert the fractions to decimals and that's what we are learning about a lot. >> after designing it the data is stored into the computer. then students are taught to program that information into the machines. within a few minutes they get to see the results. andrew lee and derian chapman build computers, small ones. >> when you are able to design something more compact out of metal and aluminum, it works as a natural heat vacuum. it dissipates heat throughout the whole case. >> how do they compete with about computer makers? >> we aren't greedy. there's a lot of fat in the computer industry. we don't care to be ga zillion
